Time slows down in Key West
Nestled at the southernmost tip of the United States lies the island paradise known as the Conch Republic. More formally known as Key West. This picturesque destination, surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, is a haven for travelers seeking a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. This destination feels more like the Caribbean than mainland USA. There’s a very laid-back vibe and a thriving art scene.
Earlier this year I took the 3.5-hour drive south along Overseas Highway to see Key West for myself. Note to road trippers, the highway becomes two lanes in either direction in some sections and the land beneath the road disappears in others. Depending on how you feel about bridges, heights, and water, you may want to consider this before starting out. At least plan your trip so that you come back during daylight hours if any of that makes the hairs of your neck stand up.
With that said, here are my five things about visiting Key West…
1. Duval Street: The heart of Key West, Duval Street is a bustling promenade filled with colorful buildings, restaurants, bars, and shops. Stroll down Duval Street, sample some Key Lime pie, and soak in the lively atmosphere.
2. Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum: Visit the former residence of the legendary author and fellow Oak Parker, Ernest Hemingway. There are many locations that he called home but this is where he penned some of his most famous works. The lush gardens and the famous six-toed cats make this a fascinating stop.
3. Accepting Atmosphere: While most of Florida can be very regressive and intolerant, Key West is not that. Borrowing from its pirate cove roots, the area is very inclusive and welcoming. Downright counterculture in some cases. Come, be yourself, and be comfortable is the vibe. Loved it!
4. Key West’s Cuisine: Savor fresh seafood at one of Key West’s many seafood shacks and enjoy the island’s signature dish, conch fritters. Don’t forget to wash it down with a refreshing Key Limeade or a tropical cocktail. Oh, and have a slice of Key Lime pie for me… I was so distracted I didn’t stop for any.
5. Southernmost Point in the Continental US: While the actual southernmost point in the United States is in American Samoa, and the southernmost dry land in the United States is about a mile further south than this often-photographed buoy, Key West is the southernmost incorporated location in the continental US. Despite the very technical definition of southernmost can be debated, it’s a destination worth visiting.
Make sure to make time to see Key West on your visit to South Florida and let me know if anything included here was helpful in your planning. As always reach out on social media if you have any questions.
Andiamo! (Just trying out a new catch phrase… andiamo means let’s go in Italian. I picked this up on my trip to Italy which you will read about soon!)
